When was soldier field renovation

All the interior spaces are maximized. You could really program all of that with shops, restaurants, bars. The home of the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers has a translucent roof but open sides, allowing airflow.

Contrast that to the financial and operational girdle they wear at Soldier Field, and the move to the suburbs must be viewed as a very real possibility.

The city needs to program the hell out of that thing. However, they are only the marquee tenant for 10 days a year. Know about breaking news as it happens. View Obituaries Place an Obituary Celebrations. Home Drive Working. Filed under: City Hall News Chicago. To honor World War I veterans in , plans were developed for a new stadium.

Construction began on the stadium in and was completed by Opening for the stadium, that was originally called Municipal Grant Park Stadium, came on October 9, Less than one year later the stadium was renamed Soldier Field and was officially dedicated on November 27, The stadium was modeled after ancient Greek and Roman stadiums.

An original agreement would have allowed the team to pursue such a deal so long as Soldier Field remained as part of the name, but the Bears abandoned that effort amid opposition from veterans and then-Mayor Richard M. So while building a new suburban stadium would come with a hefty price tag, it would also free the Bears from many of the revenue restrictions the team faces at Soldier Field that do not hinder other franchises.

Sanderson, who argued at the time the lease was executed that it was a bad financial deal for taxpayers, said there were others who contended then that the Bears would have been better off pursuing a new domed stadium at another site in the city, including not far from the nearby McCormick Place convention center. The stadium was obsolete before the first kickoff. They have the smallest dysfunctional stadium in the entire league, and it was their choice. Under the provision, the Bears are allowed to build, operate and keep all revenue from a Bears Hall of Fame, Bears retail shop, Bears sports bar and restaurant and other commercial spaces.

Another facet of the lease is the requirement that the Park District provide regular maintenance and capital improvements to Soldier Field, a point of frequent discussion between the city and the team. The Park District receives an annual capital improvements stipend from the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the public body that issued bonds to pay for the construction of Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the White Sox, and the renovation of Soldier Field.

Mayor Emanuel and the Bears need to work together to make Soldier the best possible stadium for both the fans and team as well as the city as a whole. Perhaps a retractable roof would have even been a better solution. The hosting of any of those events would be a great boost to the economy, and the process of making the stadium capable of hosting those would also be a boost to Chicago's job market.

Ideally, the Bears and Chicago will find a way to expand the stadium without making it even more of an eyesore than it already is. However, given the fact that the stadium has little space to expand or change, it's unlikely to find a simple and cost-effective solution to the dilemma at hand.
