After their argument, the tea party sits in silence until the Mad Hatter asks the March Hare the time. He blames the March Hare for getting crumbs on the watch when the March Hare was spreading butter on it. She tells him he should not waste time asking riddles that have no answers. Bored with this line of conversation, the March Hare states that he would like to hear a story, so they wake up the Dormouse. The Dormouse tells a story about three sisters who live in a treacle-well, eating and drawing treacle.
Confused by the story, Alice interjects with so many questions that the Dormouse becomes insulted. Lewis Carroll uses a lot of doubletalk and homophones to create silly misunderstandings which become amusing to the reader.
He also puts Alice in outrageous situations contributing to the playfulness of the book. The setting is Wonderland, a strange and seemingly crazy world that is entered by dropping into a rabbit hole. Animals act as normal people. Physical size as well as time are relative. Her curiosity leads her to a strange new world and all she wants is to find her way home. While she has a set goal, she often forgets about her destination. She is in a brand new world and she has difficulty adjusting and adapting.
Why is Alice so confused about who she is? She cannot remember her name. The Red Queen is the love interest of Time and the two ally: If he will give to her the powerful chronosphere and kill Alice she will give to him his love and they will rule the universe. When Alice steals the chronosphere to save Tarrant, the Red Queen orders Time to find her and kill her.
