The start is a half block up from the dead end of Green Street, in front of the "Princess Diaries" house. From the bottom you cannot see the top, so you have no idea what you are in for, which is a good thing. Just seeing the top of the first climb is daunting enough because it is a steep climb up two flights of 62 steps each. Across Vallejo Street the stairs get wider as a gilded sign in the abutment announces "Lyon Street. This is a great place to get some exercise in if you're up for running or walking up the stairs.
Do a few laps roundtrip and you'll be pretty happy with your workout. If you're really looking to get after it, throw in a few pushups and sit-ups at the top. On the weekends it can get a little crowded with people doing circuit training at the top. But hey, if that happens, take a look out at the scenic views of the bay and catch your breath for a second! Walked it, did not run it. People who run it must have thighs of steel. Views are great though. Ouch we didn't run these, but it was still pretty tiring.
Everyone definitely wanted to get snacks afterwards. The run up is long, especially if you include the fairly significant him to get to the bottom of the steps, but the view is great. If you need a breather but don't want to stop running, try running back and forth along one of the streets that intersect with the steps.
Broken into a series of plateaus, this ascent up one of San Francisco's most manicured stairways is tough going. The stairs are in a crucible of mansion-level real estate, cute hedge rows and the more unruly Presidio, topping out to reward with a timeless view of the Bay. Best stair workout! I stop halfway and add push-ups. Gorgeous views. Stash a water bottle and stretch after, your calves will thank you! The rewarding view at the top of these stairs almost makes the hard work worth while.
