Why is gaba banned in new zealand

Cause and genetic involvement in Autism Spectrum Disorder is complex and not yet understood, but some of the potentially involved genes can be found in the PWS region of chromosome 15, and in particular, the GABA receptor genes. People with depression have also been found to have reduced GABA levels. As a result of these findings, numerous studies aim to identify a GABA modulator that can normalise the altered GABA system in autism and depressive disorders.

Similar studies are also being carried out in Angelman syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome. However, in , Dr. Lauren Rice and colleagues at the University of Sydney were able to show lower levels of GABA in the brains of individuals with PWS and they associated this with the emotional problems, temper outbursts and compulsive behaviours seen in PWS.

They also discovered a correlation between GABA levels and the level of behaviour disturbance experienced by an individual. In a research project funded this year by FPWR, they now plan to see if they can restore the balance of the GABA system using a GABA-modulating drug Acamprosate and will test this using brain imaging and monitoring of behavioural changes.

They are colourless, odourless liquids usually sold in small bottles or sachets. It has also has been seen in powder and capsule form. Small doses can have a relaxant effect, reduce social inhibitions, and can produce short-term amnesia and hypotonia diminished skeletal muscle tone. Higher doses produce general anaesthesia, can also stop people breathing, reduce cardiac output, and produce seizure-like activity, and coma.

This is a 'rule of thumb' guide only because the same dose can affect different people in different ways - for example, a euphoric dose for one person could sedate another person. In the last years in New Zealand, there have been an increasing number of people admitted to accident and emergency departments who have had life threatening overdoses of Fantasy. One death has been attributed to the drug. Particular risks for these substances include:. The Ministry of Health's Dance Party Guidelines pamphlet and associated resource, has some good harm minimisation advice about dance party drugs for those who choose to take them regardless of the law.

The Guidelines give important information about staying safe, being prepared, and the risks of dance party drugs. This will mean it will be illegal for people to possess, and supply such substances. Like other illegal drugs criminal penalties are associated with offences involving these substances.

A comparison of the different Schedules penalties is shown in the Table below. More specifically, it is proposed to classify these drugs in Part 1 of Class B ie B1. Class B has three parts, B1, B2, and B3.

When drugs are classified as B1 as opposed to B2 or B3 police have wider enforcement powers including the ability to search premises and people without a warrant if they have reasonable grounds to believe an offence has been committed under the Misuse of Drugs Act The same enforcement powers are applied to drugs scheduled in A and C1. Controlled drugs are classified according to the risk of harm they pose. Accordingly, drugs posing a:. The Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs was set up this year to advise the Minister of Health on the most appropriate classification for particular drugs.

After thorough consideration of all the above information, the Committee decided the most appropriate classification for Fantasy was B1.

Before any change to the law occurs a Parliamentary Select Committee has to consider the proposed classification, before the issue is voted on by Parliament. The Health Select Committee will consider the 'Fantasy' classification in early The Ministry of Health Dance party Guidelines and associated health resource has health information about Dance parties and specific dance party drugs. The Ministry is currently updating the Guidelines to include fantasy.

Note: if you want to try picamilon, I suggest you buy it in bulk power form, as it is much cheaper that way. Last edited: Dec 19, So if it does cross i. I thought that was an interesting way to test the integrity of the BBB.

Ema Senior Member Dec 19, I just posted a follow up in that thread! Here is a link to where they talk about the Leaky Brain Barrier. Thanks Ema. I will just copy an extract from that link here: How do you know if your blood-brain barrier is leaky? A simple and easy way to find out is to do Blood-Brain Barrier Challenge. GABA is a neurotransmitter synthesized in the brain and is responsible for calming or inhibiting over activity.

So, if several hours after taking mg of GABA, you feel calm, relaxed or sleepy , you know that GABA, a molecule too large to pass through the blood-brain barrier, has nevertheless made it into your brain and is performing its calming duties. This means your blood-brain barrier has become compromised and your brain is highly susceptible to the immune rampages I discussed above. Some people, instead of feeling relaxed, will find GABA makes them feel more anxious or jittery. There are other reasons for this that will be discussed in my next book, however any reaction at all indicates a leaky brain barrier.

If you felt no change after taking GABA, that is a good sign that your blood-brain barrier is intact and functioning well. For accurate results, be sure to take this test during the day and not at bedtime. Source: here. Thanks so much There are so many great responses here. I'll do some research into all these options over christmas. The supplement phenibut is gaba with something added to it to cross the blood brain barrier.

Its quite strong and very sedating. When i tried it, it felt like it had a delayed reaction as it took along time to work, slept well but then woke up sedated for the whole day, felt like crap. This could have been dose related. I cant remember the exact dose but it may have been mg and after an hour or so no response so took another mg, may have been a third dose before i felt anything but when it hit, it hit.

I have read about people being addicted to it or having withdrawal issues etc.
